Aurora EDI Alliance Press ~ Volume 5 Issue 1 ~ May 12, 2016

Welcome Note

Welcome to the first newslettter of 2016. In case this is your first newsletter, if you'd like to read previous issues, you can find them on our website here.  The Aurora EDI Alliance Press is a quarterly newsletter dedicated to current issues, events, education and newsworthy items surrounding both EDI technology and the Aurora EDI Alliance. We would welcome any feedback from our readers on how to improve it. The Aurora EDI Alliance is a tightly knit group of U.S. companies specializing in the implementation and maintenance of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) in a variety of industries.  We are recognized experts in EDI, and can provide consulting, system analysis, design, development and training services as well as software implementation services.

Customer Spotlight

Like many success stories, PNO Candy began as a small home-based business more than 25 years ago.  Now they provide packaging, design and custom confectionary products out of a 42,000 square foot warehouse in Miami, FL.  They supply national accounts, local chains and independent retailers as well as develop private label products for many national retailers and distributors.  Having recently celebrated their 25 year anniversary, their next venture is to offer their confections directly from their website.  Keep an eye out for that on their website at or contact them for more information at

New Case Study Coming Soon

Last year, one of our long time customers realized the potential of moving to Liaison's Delta/ECS package.  Becuase of our long and successful business relationship, they agreed to allow us to do a case study on their sucessful implementaion.  This company, in the medical/pharma industry, was using an old translator which was unfortunately not being updated as it should have been.  Knowing that we have worked extensively with (and loved) the Delta/ECS package, they trusted us to help them get their business to the next level.  We hope to have this case study complete within a month or so.

Who is the Aurora EDI Alliance?

untitled-1.pngFor next few newsletters, we will be doing short bios on each Aurora EDI Alliance team member. For this one, we are featuring Art Douglas, one of our Alliance partners and an EDI "guru."

Art Douglas was trained as a programmer while serving in the US Air Force in the ‘70s.  Later, while working in the manufacturing industry, he encountered EDI for the first time, and assisted in configuring some Unix scripts in support of the EDI process.  This was flagged by a headhunter, who sent him on an interview for a job converting mainframe Gentran to TLE for Nestlé USA. A nice start to what would become a lifelong career!

One of the greatest accomplishments for any data integration specialist is knowing that you are making your clients look good to their customers.  When Art hears this very thing from his clients, he knows he has done his job successfully.  The self-proclaimed Delta/ECS evangelist of course is a big fan of the automation that comes from having a fully integrated solution that Delta/ECS can provide.  He loves showing his clients how they can solve their business challenges with automation.

When he is not working or spending time with his family, you might be able to find him teaching leadership and communication skills to those who are part of Toastmasters International, a nonprofit club that provides educational opportunities for members to improve their communication, public speaking, and leadership skills.  Although he loves his job and his Toastmasters involvement, the most important things in his life are his family and his faith.  His favorite honor/award he's received is a "World's Greatest Dad" t-shirt from his daughter.  And he says would never give up his faith in God.  When asked what he wants to be remembered for, he says, "For loving my wife and kids."

Blog Highlight:  RFID in NFL Football – What Does this Have to Do with EDI?

RFID (radio frequency ID), a cousin to the EDI 856 ASN document, which is used to track shipment cartons along the supply chain all the way to the distribution center has a new, wider adoption in NFL football. What?!  With the Super Bowl and entertaining (and expensive) media spots behind us for this year, what does EDI and RFID have to do with football?

Well in the first place the major NFL teams have adopted EDI as part of their supply chain, humming to keep those refreshment stands (think beer) and souvenir shops replenished, and RFID is widely used to track the cartons.

Aurora's Kristen Kearns Presents at TUG

Aurora's Manager of EDI Services, Kristen Kearns, recently presented at the TUG Conference in Texas.  Her presentation, Why Use Your EDI Translator for More Than Just EDI? is an idea that we always try to stress to our customers.  Today's software is not just an EDI translator anymore.  It is a powerful data transformation tool and you have probably built strong edits to check the data it passes to/from your ERP system.  You have probably automated the EDI processes as well making it a very efficient and time saving process.  Why not use your current translator to do more after you fully evaluate what it can do?   Do you even know how many employees are manually extracting data from your ERP system and sending it to customers or vendors?  Are customers/vendors/government agencies asking for data in a multitude of formats?  Kristen has been with Aurora for 20 years and has helped dozens of our clients with their ERP and data integration requirements.

Technical Terminology Time

Failover - This refers to when you have a large volume of transactions and what happens when one of your servers goes down for whatever reason.  Failover, if your software has this capability (Delta/ECS does!), is when another server takes over and continues processing seamlessly, meaning ZERO downtime.  This is extemely important for enterprise sized organizations who process tens of thousands of transactions daily.
